Democracy in Cambodia has never been in such danger since the Paris Peace Agreement of 1991.

CAMBODIA: A TEST OF COHERENCE FOR THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY By Sam Rainsy Former leader of the CNRP.
The recent, brutal political repression in Cambodia reached its zenith on November 16 with the dissolution of the main opposition party, the Cambodia National Rescue Party. This dissolution, which results from a decision by the Supreme Court instigated by the Cambodian People’s Party of Prime Minister Hun Sen, destroys the facade of democracy already badly damaged under a regime for which the concept of a separation of powers exists only on paper.
At the Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting currently taking place in Saint Petersburg for its 137th
Assembly, gathering representatives of the world’s 173 parliaments, I appeal to these parliaments for their help to save the principle of parliamentary representation on which they stand, in my country, Cambodia. In the Cambodian National Assembly, the 123 deputies are divided between two political parties, the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), led by Prime Minister Mr. Hun Sen, which has 68 seats, and the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP), which has 55 seats.
ASSOCIATION FOR DEMOCRACY IN CAMBODIA
Dear Compatriots and Friends,
I have the honour of announcing today my decision to establish the Association for Democracy in Cambodia. As I am no longer a member of any political party, and have no political role or function, I am now free from all partisan constraints and connections. Because I wish to continue to help and serve my beloved Cambodia, I believe it is my duty to use my newly found liberty and independence to rally Cambodians towards the goal of national unity based on democracy. National unity is necessary to resolve the current crisis and ensure the survival of Cambodia. Only democracy will allow all Cambodians to be heard, to respect one another and to work together to defend the fundamental interests of their country, and to ensure economic and social progress.
