Sam Rainsy's interview with Radio Free Asia (RFA) on the new political situation in Cambodia following the 05 June 2022 commune elections (Part 1).
In this first part of the interview, Sam Rainsy says that the political situation is much better than before the poll in that, with the emergence of a new opposition under the banner of the Candlelight Party or CDL. This opposition party scored 22% of the popular vote despite the election being rigged by a CPP-subservient electoral commission. The monopoly of power exercised by the CPP has been broken at the local level. The situation has also become clearer with CDL appearing as the only credible opposition party, gaining more than 2,100 commune councilor seats, while the third party, Funcinpec, got only 21 seats, just 1% of the CDL total. The score obtained by CDL puts it in a strong position to push for a reform of the electoral commission or NEC in order to ensure a more transparent poll at the national level in 2023.
