(*) TWO DIFFERENT ASSESSMENTS OF THE POLITICAL SITUATION IN CAMBODIA
1- The UN says it is “alarmed by civil society crackdown, attacks on defenders.” More information: "UN human rights experts today (November 16, 2020) expressed concerns about tightening restrictions on civil society in Cambodia, and called for an immediate end to the systematic detention and criminalisation of human rights defenders, as well as excessive use of force against them."
2- The Diplomat (Luke Hunt): "The maneuvering of Kem Sokha and Sam Rainsy once again spells trouble for their supporters inside Cambodia (…). Over the coming three years, that can only spell further trouble for their in-country supporters, who have long borne the brunt of their political agitation."
Sam Rainsy’s personal comment:
“I think it's an insult to the Cambodian people to suggest that a fight for freedom by people from all walks of society – with all the courage it requires and all the sacrifices it entails – constitutes nothing more than "political agitation." This idea shows contempt for the millions of people who voted for the CNRP in the national and local elections of 2013 and 2017. It also carries the implicit suggestion that the legitimate struggle of Cambodia's democratic opposition led by the CNRP is merely aimed at jeopardizing "law and order" and "social stability" as conceived by Hun Sen’s authoritarian regime.”
